I can always remember being afraid of thunderstorms. There was one storm that I remember being particularly frightening. It was raining so hard I could barely see our neighbor’s house just beyond the window of my bedroom. Everything appeared as though a white sheet was covering it; and the lightening just made the white appearance flash like a camera’s flash.
For some reason I didn’t have school that day and my mother’s friend came to our house to ‘babysit’ while my mother worked. I hated that – “babysitting” – I wasn’t a baby! One thing is certain though, I was glad to have a babysitter that day because I was very afraid.
Have you ever gone through such a storm in your life? Have you ever had that kind of moment when you were glad to have a friend with you…someone to calm your fears; someone to comfort you? If you have, great! I’m glad for you. If you haven’t, let me assure you, you already have! There is a friend, closer than any earthly friend; a friend, more comforting than any other .. and His name is Jesus. The word of God tells us, “…there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.” (Proverbs 18:24b) His name is Jesus!
When the storms of life are raging: when you are having trouble on your job (or can’t find a job); when your children are driving you crazy (or you’re wishing, hoping and praying that you and your husband can become pregnant – this time); when the doctor tells you, “I’m sorry, your cancer has spread; there’s nothing more we can do.” When you can’t see anything beyond the trouble around you, see Jesus. He is right there to comfort you; He is right there to see you through.
